I am obsessed with wanting to quit my job today. I won't quit my job today. But, I've got to get the hell out of here soon. There's so much more to life than this.
I don't think most of the people I work with realize that. I suppose people just grow comfortable with the fact that you've got to make money in order to get by and work isn't supposed to be fun. The catch is these people then try to over-compensate for their misery at work by wanting more material goods and services. I guess they figure if I'm going to be miserable all day I want to come home to nicest "things" and drive a new car. Unfortunatly, when you fall into that trap then they've really got you. I remember living well beyond my means in the past and then quitting is not an option. Now, I keep my expenses to a minimum, no credit cards, no loans, no extras.
I think I'll quit when I get my performance evaluation because I know that it probably won't be a very good one since I nearly dilebretly do a shitty job (although that very rarely gets noticed!). I can see it now, I'll sit there with a big, devious grin on my face while they very sincerely give me my evaluation. Then, when their finished, I'll explain that since I obviously don't do a very good job here it would probably be best for everyone if I just gave my notice. Then, I'll laugh and laugh and maybe even leave the room whistling.

Tue, January 27, 2004 - 11:16 AMAh such a beautiful scene, laughing as you exit the room. Here we are all kind of waiting for our 6 month notice. I am trying to get a group of us to stand up and applaud at the meeting (if it ever comes) and do high 5's. So far even though everyone wants to leave, no on has agreed to do it. Chickens.

Re: quitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquit
Tue, January 27, 2004 - 11:23 AMEvery day I come here wanting to quit. Some days, moreso than others, too! I hear ya! And for right now, I am "trapped". I did fall into the evils, bought a new car (no A/C in my old one!), and now I'm stuck. Car payments are evil.
But! I have decided that there is an out! I've been able to save enough to last me a few months of being unemployed. I need to get the hell out of this job. So my plan is, in July, quit, go travel around for a month, then go back to school during the day and start another crappy job. Yes, another crappy job...but at least it will be a change! Change is good.
For now, I'll be that underpaid, overworked, tech support peon! ugh! -

Re: quitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquit
Tue, January 27, 2004 - 11:53 AMNice Marisa! That's my plan too, somewhat. I'm going to quit and I'd like to travel to Bali, Indoniesia for the summer. I'm exploring ways to travel cheap or even free and trying to squirrel away some $ for the trip now. I also plan on going back to school in the fall. I figure I can either be poor and have a job I hate or be poor and go to school where I'm bound to like some if not most of my classes. Yay for us!

Tue, January 27, 2004 - 12:04 PMFunny thing is that I just decided of this "plan" on 1/22! Crazy, huh?
No quite sure where I'm going to travel yet...it really depends on how much I can save! Most likely, I think it will be Alaska - b/c I can get a free plane ticket. I looked into other places, like Peru, Costa Rica, Spain, etc etc, but don't know if I'll be able to foot the bill for the plane tick! I'm definitely trying to squirrel away money for this trip, too. But I've just come to the conclusion that I've *got* to do it!
I agree about the either being poor and have a job that I hate...! I've become a "professional student" over the years :) I love being in school, and I'm doing something that I hope to make into a career (eventually)!
Bali definitely sounds nice. I've heard good things about Bali. One of the places on my "to go" list one of these days.

Tue, January 27, 2004 - 12:10 PMI just got the, "Is everything ok", talk at my job today. I told my boss everything wasn't ok but I don't know how she could make it ok. Anyone else feel like a monkey at their job? -

Tue, January 27, 2004 - 12:17 PMyes that is sort of what I got on my one on one yesterday because he knows I am getting divorced, so I play that up. He asked, "is there anything I can do?" I said, "Yes, change core hours to start at 10 instead of 9:30"
Too funny
But I never thought of myself as a monkey. Maybe yoou are on to something and if we are they should at least provide a banana for an afternoon snack. -

Re: quitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquit
Thu, January 29, 2004 - 7:59 AMLet's all quit today! Ah, if I only could! Well, I just needed to gripe about work, so here goes...
I work on a support desk with 3 other folks (1, the manager, doesn't do crap)...so there are 3 of us taking all the issues. We had our reviews recently, and found that, it seems that on average, I take about 170-200+ issues per month, my other coworker takes on around 170 per month, and my slack ass coworker takes on like 30..and that's a good month for him.
Well...my boss hired him because he used to work here years ago, even though she knew he was flakey. But I guess he had the ins with the "good old boys"...he's sooo god damn flakey, and nothing has been done about it..til finally...he managed to piss her off so bad yesterday (his own damn fault, he's stupid).
But what pisses me off today, is that, I get an email this morning saying that he is not taking any issues today so that he can "catch up". That is such bullshit! He's had multiple "free days" in the past where he gets to catch up on his..what..2 issues a day? I can hammer out 17 issues in a day, no problem, and he can't even handle 2?!?! Give me a break!!! That fucking pisses me off. I want a free day so I can "catch up", oh, but I don't need to catch up because I actually *do* my work!!!
Aaahhh..thanks for giving me an outlet to bitch and moan about work!!! I feel much better now! -

Re: quitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquit
Thu, January 29, 2004 - 1:44 PMI can relate had the exact situation where I used to work. OMG. Why can't people handle their own jobs? This is definitely a morale buster, provided their was any moral to bust. -
-
Re: quitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquit
Thu, January 29, 2004 - 2:28 PMIt's not that they can't handle the work. They're probably lazy like me and spend more time on tribe then actually working. -
-
Re: quitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquit
Thu, January 29, 2004 - 2:31 PMI think I fall into that category. But fortunately my lack of work doesn't really fall on anyone else making them miserable, it just doesn't get done...and for some reason I still get a paycheck every 2 weeks. Go figure.

Re: quitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquit
Thu, January 29, 2004 - 11:59 PMNo, get fired!
If you're fired / laid off, you can collect unemployment, meager though it may be. You won't have any trouble collecting, don't worry about what it said on the EDD website about losing your job due to your own fault.
I was fired, and I collected unemployment for six months, no questions asked. Remember: the system is stupid, bureaucratic, overloaded, and no one has time to check up on your job searching. Enjoy the free time while you can!
If you quit, I don't think you're eligible at all. -
-
Re: quitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquitquit
Fri, January 30, 2004 - 10:26 AMYeah, your not eligible if you quit.
You've inspired me, Yo. I'm going to start trying harder to get fired now. Where there's a will there's a way! -

sure fire ways to get fired
Fri, January 30, 2004 - 12:04 PMinstead of answering the phone in a pleasant manner, pick it up and scream, "WHAT THE HELL DO YOU WANT?"
or if you don't want to be that aggressive, try muttering profanities under your breath just before you transfer them:
"hold please <you cocksucker>"
lose/throw away as many important documents you can find.
call in sick every friday or monday to give yourself a nice long weekend (although this one can backfire, they might think you are just unhappy on the job and want to "talk" and get all touchy feely and shit).
pick your nose as often as possible.
don't shower for several days or use deodorant. -

You could also fart to stink everyone out! Blame it on irritable bowel system, crohn's, or something like that. -
